The Kiski Cougars Hockey Team got a taste of the Canadian winter when the team travelled north of the border to take third place in the Gary West Senior Boys Hockey Tournament at St.Andrews College in Aurora, Ont.

The frigid weather did not deter the Cougars, who were among eight teams from north and south of the border to battle for the Gary West Cup.
The Kiski boys won two out of the four tournament games stifled by dubious refereeing decisions and lengthy penalty calls. Nevertheless, the Cougars were clear winners in the third-place consolation game, soundly beating the hosts St. Andrews College 3-2 in a rematch. Goaltender, Ben Crew, certainly kept the boys in contention with some brilliant blocks between the pipes in the first game against the hosts.

The tourney is named in honour of Gary West, a former teacher at St. Andrew’s College for 33 years. West was Athletic Director from 1965 until his retirement in 1986.

The tournament coincides with Martin Luther King Day which makes it easier for the American teams to travel and compete.
